I am glad Billy Donovan came to his senses regarding the jump to the NBA. Let's face it, the odds were stacked against him succeeding. Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Tim Floyd, Mike Montgomery, all made the jump from college to the NBA and they all failed. The sad part is they were all great college coaches who could have had legacys at Kentucky, UMass, Iowa St and Stanford respectively. At least Billy Donovan will have that chance to become Florida's version of Coach K.
What was lost in this whole situation how the Magic wound up with the right coach for the job - Stan Van Gundy. He did a great job a few years ago with the Heat, making them contenders before he was pushed aside by Team President Pat Riley. The Magic are a playoff team, they need to get to the next level. Dwight Howard is a rising star who is a few years away from being legit Superstar. Jameer Nelson and JJ Redick will be solid NBA players. Van Gundy will lead this team to the top of the conference in a few short years, while his old team the Heat will be looking to rebuild.
The Magic made the mistake of going after the Big College Name, but they wound up getting redeemed by getting the right guy.
